McCourt was chosen to reconstruct the field turf on the Boston College Field Hockey Field. The field houses the Division 1 women’s field hockey team as well as several other collegiate sports. All this work was required to be performed during three months before fall practices began.
The work on this project entailed removing and recycling the existing field turf, removal, and replacement of any unsatisfactory previous asphalt base, installation of a new high-powered irrigation system with a 164-foot sprinkler radius, underground HDPE supply pipes, a 14-foot deep irrigation pump station, a 340 foot deep supply well, a new 12,000 gallon water storage tank to feed the pump station, the installation of the new field turf, and restoration of the entire area disturb by the project. Upon uncovering the field, it was determined the existing sub-base was not in acceptable condition and not at the proper grade to receive the turf. Collaborating closely with the engineer we developed a plan to restore the existing surface to allow proper drainage and we installed a new layer of previous asphalt to rectify the grades. Despite the challenges presented by the unexpected subsurface conditions, the project was completed on time to receive reviews from the field hockey team.
