Runway 14/32 opened on Thanksgiving Day, 2006. The mile-long runway is Logan’s first new airstrip in over 30 years. The project included 250,000 cubic yards of fill, 150,000 tons of asphalt, and 250,000 cubic yards of excavation. In addition, the project called for extensive security measures, including the installation of state-of-the-art blast walls. This project required an extremely tight schedule to immediately open the runway to traffic. In addition, McCourt was working on an active international airfield, creating a confined work zone and unique scheduling challenges to accommodate existing air traffic. Despite these complications, the project finished ahead of schedule and under budget.
A letter of commendation from Massport stated:
“This obvious and controversial project was safely completed on time, under budget, and without controversy from the press or neighboring communities. This directly reflects the attitude and professionalism that McCourt brings to every project, time after time.”
