Chelsea, MA
This 2-mile design bid build construction Project of an extension to the Silverline dedicated busway in Chelsea will eventually connect the new Chelsea commuter rail station to Logan Airport. Running along the existing commuter rail line for much of the right of way the entire area had to be cleared, widened, and paved. To widen the right of way thousands of feet of retaining walls had to be installed. Each retaining wall was reviewed and redesigned by McCourt to achieve peak constructability and cost efficiency. An entire stormwater management system was installed, and several miles of duct banks were installed. One of the most interesting parts was the extension of the Washington St Bridge. A temporary utility bridge was installed to allow a complete closure of the bridge except for a small section for pedestrians and accelerated reconstruction. In addition, the underpinning of an aging masonry building was redesigned to a sheeting and earth support method to eliminate risk to the building. Due to these efforts, the bridge was reopened to traffic 221 days ahead of schedule. The construction of the 8 BRT platforms required an immense amount of engineering and field coordination to lay out the hundreds of feet of embedded conduit, wayfinding sign supports, and architectural finishes. Each platform included the construction of 3 metal pedestrian enclosures that were built on-site. The entire project was covered by over 150 CCTV cameras that communicated back to a central operations center. The photo above depicts the Washington St bridge demolition with the temp utility bridge in the foreground.
