Biomed Natural Gas Transmission Relocation
This project relocated Eversource’s existing Kendall Square gas transfer station to a new location within the limits of Vicinity’s Kendall Power Plant in Cambridge, MA. As part of this project, McCourt constructed BIOMED’s proposed three-tiered lab tower, with the first floor dedicated to the Arts. It was awarded the relocation of just under one mile of various sizes of natural gas mains throughout the streets in the Kendall Square area. On Binney Street, two custom “slam shut vaults” with newly designed control cabinets, two pressure monitoring vaults, several anode 200 ft deep wells, and fourteen live gas tie-ins, one tie into an existing 36” cast iron main utilizing a line stop tool; the first use in the USA. The site contained varying levels of contamination that had to be carefully segregated and disposed of as the project progressed. The field team coordinated with various owners and other contractors to overcome the project challenges and extremely tight schedules. This award was McCourt’s first natural gas Project.
